Census data from 2011 shows the median household income across the US was $50,054, but it was very different depending on what state you live.
The average median household income for Maryland was the highest with $67,469 while Mississippi was at the bottom with just $39,078.
Experts say the different levels can make it hard to craft policies for the middle class because the middle is not equal.
