UPDATES ON BOSTON MARATHON BOMBING: BOMBS WERE PRESSURE COOKERS FILLED WITH BALL BEARINGS AND NAILS
Sources said many of the injured people at the Boston Marathon were hit by ball bearings that were inside the bombs. The bombs were made from pressure cookers stuffed with metal ball bearings.
Some victims were hit with as many as 30 or more pieces.
CBS News said police have found pieces of an electronic circuit board that could have been used to detonate the pressure cookers.
Similar pressure-cooker bombs have been used in Afghanistan, India, Nepal, and Pakistan. It was also used in the attempted Times Square bombing in 2010.
As far as the timing, experts think it was chosen to maximize injuries. The marathon's four-hour mark is typically crowded with recreational runners crossing the finish line.
The Boston Police Commissioner said law enforcement swept the marathon area for bombs twice before the explosions went off.
